Pedestrianization of Commercial Street, Bangalore

Ideating through Collage

Imagine Commercial Street, one of the busiest business hubs of Bangalore, without the vehicles. Would it be as chaotic, as enthusiastic, as lively as it is now?

The simplest meaning of pedestrianization is the removal of vehicular traffic from city streets. To be sustainable and fit for purpose in the 21st century, the streets need to respond to the demands of climate change and shifts in culture.

Apart from providing better mobility for pedestrians, it aims to improve the pedestrian’s safety and mobility. It helps enhance the shopping experience and reduce pollution levels for a peaceful space, place to stroll around as well as a place for a

meet-and-greet.

But what about the other lens?

Would there be a loss for the businesses in the area, with the absence of the ease brought by vehicular accessibility? Would precious time be wasted, if it were to be spent looking for a parking spot outside the area? Would malls be preferred over the ‘walking plaza’, thus decreasing the footfall?

Thus, the main question to be asked is:

Should the health or the livelihood of the people be considered as the larger priority?

The medium used for this project is collage, where the final piece was 4x3 feet in size. This medium was chosen to effectively portray the various perspectives that each person may view it by, and to bring out the chaotic nature of the busy street.

The imagined pedestrianized street elements, like the street vendors and the children playing, are portrayed in illustrations on OHP sheet, to depict its imaginary nature as just a thought.
